What is an OCI Card?
The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is a special lifelong visa and travel document issued by the Government of India to foreign nationals who are of Indian origin. It is designed to provide a convenient and long-term way for individuals who have acquired citizenship of another country to maintain their cultural, economic, and social ties with India.
The OCI card grants its holders multiple-entry, multi-purpose lifelong visa privileges to visit India without needing to apply for a visa every time they plan to travel. This means that once issued, the OCI card allows the holder to enter and exit India as many times as they wish, for any purpose including tourism, business, education, or family visits, without restrictions on the duration of stay.
This program was introduced to encourage people of Indian heritage, who have settled abroad, to continue to participate in India’s growth and development, by easing travel and residency restrictions that were previously in place.
In summary, the OCI card is a valuable document for anyone of Indian descent living abroad who wants to enjoy the freedom to travel to India seamlessly, participate in cultural and economic life, and preserve their Indian roots while holding foreign citizenship.
• Visa-Free Entry to India: OCI cardholders can enter India any number of times without needing a visa.
• Lifelong Validity: The OCI card is valid for the lifetime of the holder, subject to passport renewal.
• Exemption from Registration: OCI holders are exempt from registering with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for any length of stay in India.
• Parity with NRIs: OCI cardholders enjoy parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in financial, economic, and educational fields.
• Multiple Entry Benefits: OCI card allows unrestricted travel to India without the hassle of visa applications.
• Right to Own Property: OCI cardholders can purchase property in India (excluding agricultural land).
• Access to Education: OCI holders are eligible for admission to educational institutions on par with Indian citizens.
• Employment Rights: OCI cardholders can work in India without requiring a separate employment visa, except in certain restricted sectors.

Renunciation is the official process where a person who was once an Indian citizen gives up their Indian citizenship after becoming a citizen of another country.
According to the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, India does not allow dual citizenship. This means that if someone gets citizenship in another country, they automatically stop being an Indian citizen from that date.
However, to complete this change officially and avoid any legal issues, the person must formally renounce their Indian citizenship, surrender their Indian passport, and get a Renunciation Certificate (also called a Surrender Certificate) from the Government of India.
This certificate is important for applying for an OCI card, Indian visas, or for traveling to India without legal problems.
1. Legal Compliance
Once you obtain foreign citizenship, Indian law mandates that your Indian citizenship is
forfeited. Continuing to use an Indian passport afterwards is punishable by law.
2. OCI/Long-Term Visa Eligibility
The Indian government requires proof of renunciation before issuing an OCI card or granting
long-term visas. Without this certificate, your application may be delayed or denied.
3. Smooth Travel and Status Recognition
A Renunciation Certificate confirms your foreign citizenship status in official records, ensuring hassle-free travel to India as a foreign national of Indian origin.
Before beginning the renunciation process, it is important to determine whether you are eligible. The following criteria must be met:
You Are Eligible If:
• You were previously an Indian citizen
• You currently hold a valid or expired Indian passport (even if it’s lost, you can still apply with a police report and affidavit).
• You have legally acquired foreign citizenship (e.g., USA, Canada, UK, Australia,
etc.)
• You now hold a foreign passport
You Are Not Eligible If:
• You have never held an Indian passport
• You were born abroad and have always held a foreign passport, even if you are of Indian origin
• You only hold an OCI or PIO card, and were never an Indian citizen
• You have not yet acquired foreign citizenship (i.e., you are still an Indian citizen)
• You have already renounced Indian citizenship in the past (renunciation is a one- time process)
Upon successful submission, the Government of India issues the Renunciation Certificate, confirming:
• Voluntary withdrawal of Indian citizenship
• Surrender of the Indian passport
• Legal recognition as a foreign national of Indian origin
This certificate is required for:
• Applying for an OCI card
• Requesting long-term visas to India
• Demonstrating eligibility at immigration checkpoints
Major documents:
• Indian passport (original/expired/report of loss)
• Foreign passport
• Proof of foreign citizenship (certificate or naturalization document)
• Proof of local residence (e.g., utility bills, driver’s license)
